Iker Casillas to Sign With Premier League Club in January

According to Madrid-based newspaper AS, former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas is set for a move to Newcastle United after being dropped from FC Porto.

Casillas moved to Porto during the summer of 2015 in order to play regular football after failing to keep his number one spot in Madrid.

Although he made 47 appearances for Los Blancos in the 2014/15 season, a trophyless campaign saw Florentino Perez sacking Carlo Ancelotti and shipping Casillas out the door.

Since then, he has made 93 appearances with the Portuguese giants, and managed to win the Golden Foot award this year.

However, he was surprisingly dropped for Jose Sa during a Champions league clash against RB Leipzig back in October, and has only made one appearance since.

There have been rumors of Porto wanting to sell the 36-year-old as soon as possible in order to meet UEFA's FFP rules, and Newcastle are keen to bring him to England.

The Premier League outfit is currently managed by Rafa Benitez, who is familiar with Casillas and thinks he is an upgrade to Rob Elliot -- starting keeper for Newcastle at the moment.

Casillas also wants the move in order to showcase himself in a more competitive league than Liga NOS, and hopefully earn a call-up from the Spanish national team for the 2018 World Cup.
